Caye Caulker Chronicles Hacked

May 13th, 2010 Posted in News

We regret to say that the Caye Caulker Chronicles was hacked sometime between last Saturday and Tuesday.  It has taken almost a week to get the site cleaned of malware and functional again, a herculean task which Plaine Studios of Louisiana graciously undertook voluntarily.  We are humbled and grateful to Plaine Studios and Chris Brown.  Many thanks also to Shari Trejo who brought it to our attention that the site was hacked.

Unfortunately all the archives were lost.  Malware had infected all of the files, including the entries and we had to delete all the entries as a result.  This means a wonderful part of our island’s history that was being preserved has been lost.  The server which backs up our website ran a back-up on Sunday, apparently right after the hack, so the saved file was the hacked (unusable) file.  Truly a sad and heartbreaking situation for us, as the history of the island is something to be preserved for our descendants to enjoy.

If you have any old stories or posts that were lost, please re-send them and we will be glad to re-publish them.
